First Stage of CO2CRC Emissions Reduction Project, Safely Managed by Upstream PS

Latest News

Upstream PS has successfully managed the drilling of a new appraisal well at CO2CRC’s innovative Otway Research Facility in South West Victoria.  It is CO2CRC’s largest emissions research program and the first stage of a $50 million carbon capture and storage (CCS) project.

“CO2CRC’s Otway Research Facility is Australia’s first end-to-end demonstration of carbon capture and storage and we are proud to have operated and maintained the facility since its inception more than10 years ago,” said Joe Corvetti, Upstream PS Managing Director.

“The scope of project activity across the whole life cycle requires a robust and holistic focus on management of risk, planning, implementation of right sized solutions and strong stakeholder communications whilst still following lean practices for a safe yet cost-effective operation,” said Marc Chable, Upstream PS Regional Manager Victoria.

CO2CRC has invested more than $100 million into the site over the past decade, and it is one of the best characterised carbon storage sites in the world. CO2CRC’s project developers and researchers have made substantial breakthroughs in the storage and monitoring of carbon dioxide below ground.  The current stage is focussed on developing a cost effective ‘smart field’, giving regulators and the community confidence that CO2 can be constantly monitored at lower cost.

Marc Chable and Aaron De Fina, Compliance and HSE Manager CO2CRC presented “10 Years of Successful CO2 storage operations” at the 2017 APPEA Conference in Perth.
